Bass

Bass refers to the lowest range of musical frequencies in a piece of music; these low tones provide depth and foundation to a track, typically supporting the rhythm and harmony while often working closely with the drums—particularly the kick drum—to create the groove and drive the rhythm forward, and in audio terms, bass frequencies usually occupy the lower portion of the audible spectrum (roughly 20 Hz to 250 Hz), giving music a sense of power and fullness that is especially emphasized in genres such as hip hop, electronic dance music, and rock; bass sounds are commonly produced by instruments such as bass guitars, double basses, synthesizers, or electronic bass instruments, and in modern music production they can be recorded from live instruments or generated via synthesizers and virtual instruments within digital audio workstations like Ableton Live, FL Studio, and Logic Pro, where producers shape these sounds with equalization, compression, and distortion to ensure they fit properly within a mix.
