Demo Tape

A demo tape—nowadays more accurately called a "demo" because most are made digitally—is a brief recording produced by an artist or band to showcase their music, songwriting, or performance abilities to record labels, producers, promoters, or potential collaborators, historically mailed as a cassette but now typically shared via online platforms, email, or streaming links; these recordings usually comprise a handful of tracks that capture the artist's style and sound without requiring full polish or professional mastering, so their primary aim is to convey the musical concept, songwriting skill, and overarching artistic vision, with modern musicians leveraging digital audio workstations like Ableton Live, FL Studio, and Logic Pro to record instruments, program beats, and arrange songs before sending them out to the industry.
