MIDI

MIDI—Musical Instrument Digital Interface—is a technical standard that enables electronic musical instruments, computers, and music software to communicate by sending digital messages instead of actual audio; each MIDI message conveys musical actions such as which note was played, the intensity of its attack, and its start and stop times, along with additional control signals like modulation or pitch bend, thus allowing performers to adjust instrumentation, edit performances, or alter compositions after recording; it is extensively employed in digital audio workstations such as Ableton Live, FL Studio, and Logic Pro, where producers often use MIDI controllers—keyboard or drum‑pad devices—to input and capture MIDI data; once recorded, this data can trigger sounds from virtual instruments, synthesizers, samplers, or even hardware instruments, making MIDI indispensable for modern music production, composition, film scoring, and live performance by giving creators the ability to experiment with diverse timbres while preserving the original musical execution.
